This is a part-time position beginning October 1 through May 22, as a member of a team committed to a student's successful completion of college math courses and who is proficient in upper level mathematics. The professional math tutor will support students through supplemental instruction and direct tutoring a drop-in and/or scheduled appointment basis. Hours will be set based on student demand and need, with a focus on higher level mathematics including Abstract Algebra and Analysis with support of other college level mathematics courses as needed.
Tutor students on a one-on-one basis in required mathematics, including mathematics courses at the undergraduate level.
Be a supplemental instructor for Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra and other higher level mathematics courses as needed.
Coach students in study techniques and testing strategies.
Instruct students in use of graphing calculator.
Create academic strategies around students' learning needs and personal goals.
Maintain confidentiality of student needs and challenges.
Work collaboratively with Math Lab instructor and staff of the Academic Development and Support Center (ADSC).
Follow policies and procedures of the ADSC.
Integrate the core values of respect, compassion, integrity, justice and service in all aspects of interaction.
Perform other duties as required by Director.
MA/PhD in Mathematics with background in Abstract Algebra and Analysis not MA Ed or MAT.
Knowledge of all levels of mathematics, specifically Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra
Exceptional customer service skills.
Ability to communicate effectively (both verbal and written).
Experience working with students both individually and in groups, preferably in a college/university setting.
Ability to work with students who have learning disabilities.
Computer proficiency, including graphing calculators, MS Word and e-mail; working knowledge of MS Excel preferred; aptitude to learn new software.
Ability and willingness to work evening hours, if necessary.
