The Center for Learning Resources, at the University of New Haven, is a national-award winning academic content support facility with 11 divisions serving four campuses. We are the winner of the 2016 ATP Program of Excellence Award, serve over 50% of UNH students annually, and see exceptional outcomes for our users. We seek a committed educator who is a team player and willing to use a metacognitive approach in their tutoring. We are searching for a professional tutor who can support one of the following tracks in our Writing Lab: Engineering Technical Writing and Business Technical Writing. This person must be able to additionally support a general student population in ESL (being certified) or a general college population in cross-disciplinary writing. The qualified candidate will hold a master's degree and/or doctorate in one of the aforementioned subjects and possess university-level teaching experience that includes the aforementioned types of writing. Prior tutoring experience is preferred but is not a substitute for classroom experience. This position requires that you be onsite at the University's West Haven, Connecticut location. Applicants who can support Engineering or Business Writing and are ESL certified will be given preferential consideration.
Duties include tutoring primarily undergraduate and graduate students writing and presentation-based assignments, including assisting with documentation. We use a metacognitive approach that focuses on fostering recognition of their optimal learning style and independence in the tutoring process and that avoids proofreading/correcting work for students. The applicant should be comfortable tutoring students individually, and occasionally in small groups for group projects/papers and recording data from those sessions. Tutors may be asked to prepare and present workshops during their scheduled shifts, preview new software, and help create in-house resources for the CLR. As part of their contract, tutors are required to attend staff meetings, including a preterm meeting each term, utilize our reporting software, and address departmental goals during work periods they are not engaged in tutoring.
